Hansen Motorsport has completed a comprehensive review of its carbon footprint for last year’s FIA World Rallycross (World RX) season. Revealing its methods for reducing the impact of international operations, the 2024 Sustainability Report forms part of a wider mission to drive broader climate action within the rallycross sphere. Thanks to its 2024 efforts, Hansen Motorsport remained carbon neutral for a third-consecutive year, having been the first rallycross team to achieve the feat in 2022. Building on that milestone, the team continues to progress towards its goal of net-zero emissions by 2030, working closely with the FIA and other partners. Guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and maintaining FIA 3-star environmental accreditation, Hansen Motorsport strives for more than just environmental progress. The Swedish squad continues to champion initiatives that span health, equality, and education. At the 2024 World RX of Portugal event last September, both the Hansen World RX Team and it’s junior counterpart #YellowSquad in RX2e were under the stewardship of female team managers – a first for both Hansen Motorsport and the world of rallycross. Susann Hansen, Head of Sustainability, said: “Rallycross as a concept has some ideal features from an environmental perspective. The compact format does not take a lot of land and is “easy” to move to other locations, such as city centres, leaving a better footprint on nature. “With the FIA taking over, 2025 will mark a turning point for World RX. The FIA’s determination to have sustainable motorsports across all their categories will help support our strong environmental agenda. As a team we keep doing what we have done all the time. Step by step we learn and improve to give the younger generations a planet as wonderful as the one we have grown up in.” Pierre Villez, FIA Sport Sustainability Manager, said: “Hansen Motorsport continue to set a high standard when it comes to embedding sustainability into the core of motorsport operations. As the first World RX team to achieve an FIA 3-star Environmental Accreditation, their consistent involvement in FIA sustainability initiatives and commitment to transparency through detailed reporting have become a reference point for the rallycross community. “We encourage more stakeholders across the championship to take similar meaningful steps towards long-term environmental and social responsibility. We look forward to seeing how Hansen Motorsport’s sustainability ambitions continue to progress in the years ahead.” In 2024, Hansen Motorsport recorded a carbon footprint of 214 TCO2e, an impressive 61% reduction from 2019 levels and 54% less than emissions in 2023. To offset remaining emissions, Hansen Motorsport is supporting the Balabanli Wind Power Plant. Based in Türkiye, Balabanli represents the first offsetting project situated in a country from the current World RX race calendar, marking an initial step towards the team’s aspirations to offset emissions with initiatives related to race locations. Beyond reducing its own environmental impact, Hansen Motorsport also contributed to external efforts. This ranged from donations to SOS Children’s Villages, World Wildlife Fund, and – following the FIA Awards ceremony in Rwanda – the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, as well as actively working with partners such as Hydrogen Sweden towards new transport solutions. Last year, Hansen Motorsport also reaffirmed its commitment to global sustainability standards. The rallycross outfit continued to be a signatory of the Race to Zero campaign and retaining certification under ISO 14001 for environmental management. Looking ahead, Hansen Motorsport plans to transform its transportation network, operating sustainable vehicles across short to medium distances, and investing in renewable fuels for long-distance transport. While Hansen Headquarters already operates on renewable electricity, the installation of solar panels will also form part of the offsetting strategy in the near future.
