Kevin Hansen made it two podiums in as many races today (18 August) with second place in Round 6 of the 2024 FIA World Rallycross Championship. The podium marked his second of the weekend, after third in the first instalment of the Belgian double-header, and rounded out a successful event for the Hansen World RX Team in Mettet. The Hansen team entered the sixth round of this year’s World RX campaign off the back of a double podium triumph in Saturday’s action. 2019 World RX Champion Timmy Hansen returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory, working together with Kevin to secure the Swedish squad’s first silverware of the season. Now just over the halfway point of the season, the three podiums in Mettet has launched the Hansen drivers and team up the championship standings. Kevin now sits third in the standings on 109 points – just four points adrift of the runner-up spot – with Timmy one point behind in fourth, as the Hansen World RX Team strengthens its second place spot on the championship leaderboard. Picking up where they left off, both Timmy and Kevin had a strong start in the opening Qualifying session of the day. Taking a wide line into the first corner, Kevin charged into the lead of the race as Timmy took third behind KMS’ Johan Kristoffersson. An early joker for Timmy proved the right decision come the closing stages of the race, as he jumped into second place ahead of Kevin in third. The Peugeot 208 RX1e cars of the Hansen team lined up on the inside of the KMS cars for Heat 2, and Kevin muscled his way to the front of the pack once more. It was déjà vu for Timmy as well, finding himself in third and opting for another early joker strategy. This time it would not pay off, as the #21 Hansen driver found himself stuck behind KMS’ OC Veiby, eventually crossing the line third behind Kevin in second. In Semi-Final 1, another good launch from Timmy allowed him to leap into second place but, struggling on the dry tyres, the Swede would eventually end up stuck behind Veiby once again to finish in third and sneak through to the Final. Following a quick tyre change on the pre-grid, Kevin got his elbows out for the start of the next Semi-Final to claim third on track, before inheriting a place when Andersson took her joker lap. Extending his advantage just enough in the remaining laps, Kevin retained second to take a spot on the second row in the Final. Both drivers did well to make it through the opening corners in a chaotic start to the Round 6 Final, with Kevin claiming second and Timmy recovering from contact at the back of the field. With a smoking rear tyre Kevin pushed his #71 car to the limit to extend his advantage over the chasing pack and, as he exited the joker, slotted into third behind Timmy. In pursuit of another double podium for the team, an impressive defensive display from Kevin bought Timmy some time for his joker, but in the end it was only enough to help his brother into fifth place. The Hansen World RX Team will be on the hunt for more podiums and points at the next rounds of World RX as the championship heads to Montalegre, Portugal, for its penultimate double-header of the 2024 season (7-8 September). Kenneth Hansen, Team Principal at Hansen World RX Team, said: “We had both cars in the Final once again, with Kevin starting in third and Timmy in sixth. It is a very challenging first corner and Kevin got some damage there, but he managed to hold onto second in the end and Timmy was in the mix. “Overall we have had a very good weekend. We have found some more speed and we feel that we are more involved in the game now. We need to play the game as best as we can, but we’ve seen now that if we do play our cards right it is possible to get a win.” Kevin Hansen, Hansen World RX Team driver, said: “I think we did well to get onto the second row of the Final today as we felt a little on the backfoot compared to yesterday. I had some contact from behind in the opening corner and thought that might be the end of the weekend for me, but I managed to land on four wheels and get back on the throttle. Then it was just a case of managing the rear tyre against overheating, but we pushed when it mattered, and it feels great to come away with two podiums from the weekend.” Timmy Hansen, Hansen World RX Team driver, said: “Yesterday we played the team game and came away with a double podium that included a win, and today we managed to get back on the podium with Kevin in second, so the team are feeling good after a positive weekend here in Belgium. Overall, we have made a huge improvement, but the car is very different now and working a lot better so we are right up there with the CE Dealer Team’s electric cars. That is where are fight is for now because the KMS cars have that weight advantage, but if we can play the game right maybe we can steal some more wins.”
