Kevin Hansen takes victory in double-podium for Hansen World RX Team at Montalegre

The Hansen World RX Team added two more podiums to its tally today (8 September) as Kevin Hansen took victory in Round 8 of the FIA World Rallycross Championship ahead of Timmy Hansen in third. Setting off from pole in the Final, Kevin secured his fourth podium of the season, while Timmy added a sixth piece of silverware to the team’s 2024 collection. A rollercoaster Saturday saw both Hansen brothers in the Final, albeit with Timmy on the back row and Kevin eyeing up the long start straight from the front of the grid. A confident run from Timmy ended in the wall as the Swede lost visibility as he entered the start straight, while Kevin pushed to close the gap to the front, getting ahead of OC Veiby to take bronze in Round 7 and second in the championship standings. Quickest out of the blocks in today’s action was Timmy, taking the win in his Heat 1 race to mark a great recovery for the team after the damage caused in Saturday’s Final. The 2019 World RX Champion then rode that momentum into the following Heat, taking another win to finish as Top Qualifier. Kevin recovered from a difficult Heat 1 race to take the win and lock out Heat 2 for the Hansen squad. In the first of the Semi-Finals, Timmy lined up on pole alongside Kevin, and the pair worked together to shut the door on CE Dealer Team’s Klara Andersson behind. As the cars exited the first corner, Kevin took the lead on the outside with Timmy slotting into second and the Hansen drivers pulled away from the pack to hold track position. Setting off from pole, Kevin surged down the start straight with Timmy alongside him after a strong launch from the second row. As the teammates rounded Turn 1 it was Timmy in the lead, and Kevin entered the joker early from second with Johan Kristoffersson hot on his heels. A dramatic showdown ensued between Timmy and OC Veiby, with each gaining the lead throughout the race. It was Timmy out in front as he entered the joker and Kevin came through to take the lead after an impressive defensive display ahead of Kristoffersson. While Kevin neared victory at the finish line, Timmy had to react quickly to an overtake by Veiby, and the Swede was able to regain third in the final corners. Kenneth Hansen, Team Principal at Hansen World RX Team, said: “We had a much better day today. We were in the game yesterday, but today we were really fighting for the win. Kevin showed that it is possible to beat the combustions here. I must say it was fantastic rallycross. There were a lot of overtakes and a lot of entertainment – this is when rallycross is at its best. Timmy on the podium and Kevin first…you can’t ask for much more than that.” Kevin Hansen, Hansen World RX Team driver, said: “Finally my first win with an electric Peugeot. I had a really good car all weekend, we didn’t have to change much, and for sure we had some strengths down to Turn 1 so we just tried to maximise the opportunity. “There was a lot of guessing and a lot of being completely blind in that Final, and we had to defend but couldn’t defend too much if we were going to catch up to the leaders. A tricky Final but that just makes the win feel even better.” Timmy Hansen, Hansen World RX Team driver, said: “The weekend here ended fantastically for the team. Three podiums across the two days with Kevin’s third place yesterday. Today’s Final was a brilliant rallycross race with loads of action and loads of passes. I had the lead in the Final but there was a big battle with OC Veiby so I lost quite a time in that. Luckily it was Kevin behind as he had taken the joker early. “A massive thanks to the team, the car was so good this weekend. All of the struggles from early in the season are now gone. The car is well balanced, good grip, just an overall amazing package. I’m very happy about this result and it puts us in a good position now heading into the final double-header of the season.”
