Legendary Nurburgring beckons for Hansen Team in World RX season-finale
Just as quickly as it got underway, the 2022 FIA World Rallycross Championship will draw to a close this weekend at the historic Nurburgring Circuit in Germany, where the first ever all-electric World RX season will reach its conclusion.
For the Hansen World RX team, a four-time winner of FIA World RX titles, the last instalment of the campaign means one more opportunity to fight for the top places on the podium and to make a final assessment of the competitive order ahead of the winter season, and a chance to re-group ahead of 2023.
But before thinking about the next chapter, Hansen World RX drivers Timmy and Kevin Hansen are both in the midst of the fight to secure a top three overall position in the Drivers’ Championship, driving the 500kW four-wheel-drive Peugeot 208 RX1es.
2019 World RX Drivers’ Champion Timmy Hansen is currently second in the Drivers’ standings, while 2016 Euro RX Champion Kevin Hansen is fourth. With four drivers covered by just 11 points in the battle to attend the prestigious FIA Gala at the end of the year, the racing will be fierce!
World RX’s first visit to the Nurburgring was held in snow-covered wintery conditions last year, but warmer temperatures this weekend are expected, with the event the first traditional single-header round to be run over two days within World RX 2022 since the opening round of the season in Norway, back in August.

The third of three Formula 1 circuits to conclude the 2022 World RX season, the rallycross layout at the famous German venue is located in the Mullenbachschleife section of grand prix track, within the wider complex of the legendary Nordschleife circuit – widely renowned as ‘The Green Hell’.
A 90 degree right-hander begins the rallycross lap, the World RX drivers then crossing between sealed and unsealed surfaces for the 1.029km route. The joker lap section is on gravel, running around the outside of turn four.

Last year at the Nurburging, the Hansen World RX team claimed its third World RX Teams’ title, but the Hansen squad has been racing in top-flight rallycross events in Germany for decades. Arguably the best performance for a Hansen driver was at the Estering in Buxtehude in 2015, when Frenchman Davy Jeanney dominated. Fastest in Heat 1, Jeanney would start on pole position for the rest of the weekend, winning Heats 2 and 3. The only blot on his copybook was in Heat 4, when he hit the wall on the loose-surface section, but thereafter, he won his semi-final and then the final in style, taking the win by five seconds ahead of rally legend Petter Solberg. To make it a double celebration for Team Peugeot-Hansen, Timmy Hansen finished the final in third.
“The weather this year at the Nurburging looks very different to last year, which can be a good thing for us.
Of course we were both happy and unhappy with how things went last time out in Barcelona, we lacked some performance to be able to fight for the win on the Sunday, even if on Saturday it went our way and we took our first electric win.
We are working hard to take the fight for the podium and victory again this weekend, especially as we have a good possibility of finishing second and third in the Drivers’ Championship.
We have changed our setup a little in the team as we look to find more performance and be more efficient. We know some areas where we can improve so hopefully we can end the year on a high.”
“I’m very excited for this weekend. Last year it was very hectic at the Nurburgring with a double-header event, so this year racing in a single round, we can approach it in a different way.
We have some new people joining us in the team to understand the car even better and develop for next year. Obviously we will try and get as good a result as we can this weekend and in the championship – but we are focused on preparing for 2023 too.
It’s a great track in Germany and I hope we can really have a fantastic event.”
“It’s been quite an intense season but it doesn’t feel like very long ago that we got started.
I’m going to try and enjoy this last event before the off season – we need to enjoy every lap and all of the racing.
There was snow in Germany last year and there has been some work done on the track so we don’t really know what to expect, but most of all it’s about enjoying these incredible cars and continue to work to improve and go faster to lay down more groundwork for the future. And of course, we want to get the best result possible as well.”
