What would you do with an F1 car for a day? This was the question posed to Timmy and Kevin Hansen by our friends over at Red Bull Sweden, and their imaginations went wild. The pitch? David Coulthard would be taking a road trip through Scandinavia in his Oracle Red Bull Racing RB7, making a pit stop in the Hansen’s backyard along the way. It didn’t take long for Kevin and Timmy to hatch an exciting plan. Kevin Hansen said: “It was pitched to us that the F1 car could be in Sweden and that Red Bull would like the Hansens to join in on the Scandinavian trip. We knew almost straight away that we wanted to showcase what rallycross is capable of. That is where the gap jump came in, and we wanted to take that to another level.” Timmy Hansen said: “Red Bull Sweden asked if we had anything cool to bring to the table and I had this idea to jump in opposite directions over the RB7. A lot of people have jumped over an F1 car, but this was a new take on it, so we ended up going for it. “Kevin and I designed the jump, and we discovered that it is terrifying to test jump something that we had built ourselves. I had done it before in Nitrocross with Travis Pastrana, but it was always Travis that tested the jumps.” Kevin added: “At first, we wanted to do an even bigger jump where one rallycross car jumped over the F1 car, and then the second rallycross car jumped over both of those cars. That got a bit too risky for a lot of reasons, but we were still able to pull off an amazing stunt. “We used the design of the jump from our 2021 Wings for Life World Run video and turned that tabletop jump into two gap jumps. In the end we only had the day before the shoot to test and refine the jumps which meant the pressure was on.” So, the plan was to simultaneously jump over Coulthard’s F1 car from opposite directions, timing it just right so that both rallycross cars crossed over the middle of the RB7. No big deal… Add onto that challenge a short run up of less than 30 metres for Timmy’s jump, and you have got yourself a stunt of epic proportions. Timmy explained: “The day before the shoot, I came up short on my second attempt, landing with the edge of the jump under my car. I had only just made it the first time, and when I went around to do it again the gravel had come loose, so I got too much wheel spin on the take off and barely made it. “We had to redesign the jump overnight and I barely slept because I didn’t want to do it again. It was a huge relief to clear it the first time the next morning. I had to be flat out from the treeline to the take off and I was still worried about the gravel, but we got that amazing shot with me and Kevin in opposite directions with the noses of our cars above the F1 car.” Kevin added: “The shoot itself was tricky because we had rain in the area, and we couldn’t jump when it was slippery. Luckily, the weather sided with us in the end, but we still had to hit the perfect jump from both directions at the same time. All we had was a radio with someone saying ‘3,2,1, go’ so we just had to keep adjusting our starting positions and try to get it right. We did about 6 jumps in the end, and it was actually on the second attempt that we pulled off the money shot. We didn’t manage it again in those next four jumps because it was that tricky to do.” The stunt acted as a dramatic finale to the Hansen cameo in Coulthard’s trip. The build-up was a chase scene filmed on a closed forest road, and the picturesque view of the rallycross cars flanking the RB7 in the remote Swedish wilderness was a perfect first impression. Timmy said: “I’m very proud that we did it. Also, to mention, we had to use the RX2e cars because this was recorded shortly after the fire at Lydden Hill. So, there were many obstacles to overcome – the fire was a challenge in many ways – but we came through it, created an amazing product, and everyone went home smiling. It’s a great video and a great story overall. “I hope we get to do something with Red Bull again soon, and maybe I will come up with a less wild idea for the stunt so that Kevin and I don’t have to build gap jumps ourselves.” Kevin concluded: “I think everybody’s jaw dropped when they saw what rallycross cars can do. The final video was amazing and to race with an F1 car was such a cool experience. Timmy and I love a project, especially if it is with Red Bull.
