Timmy
Hansen extended his podium streak with third place in Nyirád, Hungary, as the FIA World Rallycross Championship completed Round 3 of the 2025 season (19-20 July).
A difficult week for the
Hansen World RX Team ended with a third piece of silverware this year, as Timmy battled from the back row of the Final to take another podium – alongside third and second in Sweden and Portugal, respectively.
Timmy entered Round 3 third in the championship standings, ahead of team-mate Kevin
Hansen in fifth, after a dramatic weekend in Höljes full of rain and technical issues for the
Hansen outfit.
Starting on the outside of their Q1 Heats following the Round 3 Qualifying draw, the
Hansen brothers struggled to climb the standings
on the unforgiving ‘Red Cauldron’ circuit.
Contact from CE Dealer Team’s Klara Andersson in Q2 sent Kevin into a spin as he exited the joker, dropping him from second to last in the Heat, and after Saturday’s two qualifying sessions, Timmy was fifth and Kevin eighth overall.
An already difficult day for the Swedish squad grew worse when gearbox oil was discovered in the electric motor of Timmy’s car.
Working through the night to resolve the problem, the team headed into Sunday on the back foot.
A dramatic opening corner in Q3 hindered Kevin’s run, as the #71 driver recovered from contact in Turn 1, and it was another difficult start in Q4. Patrick O’Donovan made contact with pole sitter Timmy through the second corner, pushing him into the side of Kevin and passing through on the inside to eventually take the Heat win.
The struggles of Qualifying meant that Timmy and Kevin lined up alongside each other on the second row of Semi-Final 1. Up against Johan Kristoffersson and OC Veiby in the KMS EV cars, getting both
Hansen drivers through to the Final was going to be a challenge.
Contact between Timmy and OC Veiby opened the door for Kevin to joker on the first lap and push hard to close the gap to the pair battling ahead. The KMS team’s dominant form continued, however, holding onto first and second ahead of Timmy in third.
Drawing on his rallycross experience for the Final, Timmy managed to slip through on the inside of Turns 1 and 2 unharmed, slotting into third place from the back row. The 2019 World RX Champion kept OC Veiby and the podium in his sights for the remainder of the race, crossing the line for his third piece of silverware this season.
Kenneth Hansen, Team Principal at Hansen World RX Team, said: “It has been a very difficult weekend for the team here in Hungary. The mechanics and engineers worked very hard, especially on the Saturday to repair Timmy’s car. Just as we were starting to feel happier with the set-ups for Timmy and Kevin, we ended up with both of our cars in the same Semi-Final, and up against the KMS drivers who were very dominant this round.
“Timmy managed to get third place in the Final even though we have been struggling for pace. He has a lot of rallycross races under his belt and he knows how to play the game. Coming away with third after so many problems feels like a win for the team, and we will take that positive attitude with us to Finland.”
Timmy Hansen, Hansen World RX Team driver, said: “P3 is more than we deserved this weekend, but we played the game right. We fought gloves off, and we were in the right place at the right time. It’s honestly scary out there sometimes. To pitch the car in knowing that if it doesn’t stick then it’s a heavy crash here at Nyirád – but it stuck and I’m just glad to be at the finish line. We didn’t have the pace this weekend so there is a lot to work on if we’re going to be competitive at the next round in Finland. For now though I’m going to enjoy my third podium of the season.”
Kevin Hansen, Hansen World RX Team driver, said: “This was probably the worst rallycross weekend that I’ve had in many years, so I’m feeling grateful that it’s over. We tried so many things but we just couldn’t find the pace. Add on to that getting pushed off yesterday and not pulling off our strategy in the Semi-Final. A lot of work to do ahead of Finland if we want to compete with the other electric cars, but I’ll keep giving it everything I’ve got.”
