Timmy Hansen claims Nurburgring podium in positive weekend for Hansen World RX Team

The first year in a brand-new era of the FIA World Rallycross Championship for all-electric cars concluded at the legendary Nurburgring circuit in Germany, where not only did the Hansen World RX Team secure another podium, but it’s focus on challenging for the 2023 world titles began in earnest. Racing a brace of Peugeot 208 RX1es in the final instalment of the 10-round World RX season – as part of Hansen Motorsport’s biggest ever investment in the discipline – brothers Timmy and Kevin Hansen worked hard throughout the single-header weekend to secure the best possible results ahead of the winter, with a number of new ideas implemented to the two cars.

By qualifying for the final, thanks to victory in the progression session and semi-finals, Timmy Hansen secured second in the Drivers’ championship, then claimed a podium finish in third when the final results were published. Kevin Hansen meanwhile had twice been forced wide in the tight first corner of the Nurburgring track, so in the final, elected to brake early, tuck in on the inside and follow leader Johan Kristoffersson. The younger Hansen brother dropped to third after turn two, but took his joker at the first opportunity, then got the hammer down, setting pace good enough to climb to second by the finish.

However, unfortunately for the team a lower wishbone on the No.71 car in technical scrutineering was found to be overweight, and Kevin Hansen was excluded from the final. Former European RX Champion Kevin Hansen therefore finished fifth in the Drivers’ standings, while the Hansen World RX Team finished second in the Teams’ Championship.

Kenneth HANSEN Hansen World RX Team – Team Principal

Kenneth Hansen “We found things this weekend, with some different thinking and some different people. We learned a lot for next year. Of course we wanted a good result and we had a good weekend too with good speed. We are pleased to be on the podium again, but what happened after the final in scrutineering, I was really surprised because I am the one who checks the parts and weights – we had one front wishbone that was 90 grams too heavy. The wishbone had been repaired, it shouldn’t have been on the car and it was only on one side, but still it was too heavy. There was no performance gain but it should conform and we took the penalty. It’s a hard punishment, but we just have to take it. It’s my responsibility and it was purely a mistake. Overall, our 2023 season already starting this weekend and it’s a very positive feeling.”

“To finish second in the Drivers’ championship is fantastic and also second for the team in the Teams’ championship is a great result. Of course we want to win and I know we are all still very hungry to create a better package, but we will absolutely take this result and look to the future. I’m proud of our guys who kept the car in one piece all season long – we’re going to celebrate tonight then immediately get our heads down and get to work to make some proper improvements to this car for 2023.”

“Obviously we wanted to win this weekend, but sometimes you just need to maximise your performance and we have really done that. I’m pleased that the car felt great this weekend finally and we still have more performance to find, but we are working on that. We have good signs and better understanding now. Generally the first season of electric World RX has been really fun and a huge milestone for Hansen Motorsport, but we want to win the championship and we will work very hard to find some more answers for 2023. We’ve never had these kind of smiles and positivity in the team before, with some brilliant partners and we are very motivated to continue this journey.” For more awesome photos, videos and other content please visit: Red Bull Content Pool
