Timmy Hansen, the 2019 FIA World Rallycross Champion, is aiming squarely at winning back his crown in 2021. The 29-year-old has taken victories at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya – which hosts the season opener next weekend – for the last two seasons in a row, so will be hoping for a similar performance this year.
“I’m super excited to start this season,” said Timmy. “I hope now the work we are putting in will pay off, that in the beginning we can be there and fight for wins right from the start, and if we keep doing that through the season hopefully we’re thereabouts to fight for the championship.”
Neither Hansen World RX Team nor Timmy himself are complacent about resuming where they left off at the end of last season. With several strong opponents in the field – not least his own brother and team-mate, Kevin Hansen – nothing is being left on the table in the quest to extract maximum performance from the first day of the season.
“It’s going to be a very tough season; everyone’s working very hard and no one is leaving anything to chance. Kevin is strong, he’s growing year by year. Johan Kristoffersson is strong – he was the champion last year. I know Niclas Grönholm is super fast and his car is a weapon.

“I really hope this car [the Peugeot 208 WRX] will be competitive against both of them – they have really strong cars, and we need to be at our best to beat them.”
There’s also the added significance of a final season with the current specification 208 WRX, before combustion engines are replaced in World RX by an all-electric powertrain in 2022.
“For World Rallycross, this is the last season they’ll be running old combustion engines. In 2022 we’re moving to electric rallycross, going to faster cars, more technically advanced cars, and stepping into the future. It’s massively exciting to be part of something new like that.
“Firstly, let’s enjoy this last season with the cars we’ve been loving and enjoying for a lot of years now, and after that I’m super ready to tackle the electric era.”
Hansen World RX Team’s season begins with World RX of Catalunya on 23-24 July.
